HOUSTON – KPRC 2 and American Furniture Warehouse are surprising 20 deserving high school seniors with scholarships in 2024. All students selected for scholarships have been nominated by their high schools.

Castillo told KPRC 2′s Zach Lashway that he struggled to speak fluent English until he reached seventh grade. Now, the future graduate is notably well-spoken and dedicated to making Houston a better place for children. He is a member of the Houston Child-Friendly Cities Initiative Youth Council, run through the City of Houston’s Mayor’s Office of Education and Youth Engagement.

Castillo founded and serves as President of the RedHawk Spirit Team at his school. He is also the editor of the school’s yearbook and he helps manage the NHECHS social media pages as part of an internship. He is completing an additional internship with Atlas Scholars that focuses on professional networking and development.

Crediting his mother for his love of learning, Castillo says he plans to study Education at the University of Texas in Austin.
