KPRC 2 Senior Scholarship: Lamar High School senior Alika Frankovska’s remarkable journey

HOUSTON – KPRC 2 and American Furniture Warehouse are surprising 20 deserving high school seniors with $2,500 scholarships in 2024. All students selected for scholarships have been nominated by their high schools.

Lamar High School senior Alika Frankovska is the sixteenth scholarship winner from the Class of 2024. Lamar High School is part of the Houston Independent School District.

Frankovska is a Ukrainian refugee who fled from Kyiv in 2022 due to the Russian-Ukrainian war. In her nomination essay, Frankovska noted, “The war forced us into severe financial hardship, making us refugees and homeless.”

For Frankovska, her mother, and her sister, it was important to continue her education in English. She is currently excelling in advanced placement courses at Lamar High School.

There’s a long list of extracurricular activities in which Frankovska has participated. They include basketball, volleyball, soccer, badminton, competitive dance, theatre and more. She is also an artist.

Frankovska speaks fluent English, Ukrainian, Russian and Spanish and she volunteers her time as a translator. She also volunteers with Humanitarian Aid for Ukrainians.

This fall, Frankovska will be attending the University of Texas. She was accepted into the school’s honors program for Economics.
