Houston Astros claim RHP Declan Cronin from White Sox, designate Joel Kuhnel

The Houston Astros announced Thursday they claimed right-handed pitcher Declan Cronin off waivers, from the Chicago White Sox.

The Astros designated right-handed pitcher Joel Kuhnel for assignment as the corresponding move, to clear a roster spot for Cronin.

The 26-year old reliever will battle with a handful of pitchers for a bullpen spot, bringing a 94 MPH sinker and an 86 MPH sweeper.

Cronin made his MLB debut in 2023, pitching in 11 innings in 9 games with Chicago. Cronin had a 9.00 ERA, with 8 strikeouts and 7 walks. He flashed potential in an August appearance vs. the Yankees, striking out 5 in 2 scoreless innings.

The Astros let go of Kuhnel after bringing him in a trade in July. Kuhnel had a 4.66 ERA in Houston in 9.2 innings.

The Astros 40-man roster is currently full.
